My Style: Caitlin Brax
If you love vintage, Caitlin Brax will steal your heart. She and her effortlessly cool mom Lori comb estate sales for fashionable vintage clothing and home decor to dress their Tyler, Texas based brick-and-mortar and online stores dubbed Alex & Afton Vintedge (AAVintedge for short).
“We stock our shop with cool girl vintage pieces as well as funky home accents,” says Caitlin, an East Texas native who spent several years in LA in the retail and styling scene. “We strive to be known for our brand of effortless-cool-girl-vintage-nonchalant-bohemian-rock-and-roll-Sienna-Miller-Kate-Moss-cool. Did I say cool enough?”
On the racks you’ll also find Mod Melrose, the mother-daughter duo’s handmade clothing label made with vintage patterns and textiles. What started as a a handful of bohemian caftans and tunics has snowballed into a fully-loaded fashion line that includes cocoon shrugs, metallic bell bottoms, sassy jumpsuits and even turbans (we love the crushed velvet styles).
“We intend to keep growing and evolving as long as we can. We love our clients and are fortunate to have a very loyal customer base,” says Caitlin. “We are thankful for every single sale.”
Your style in five words:
Effortless. Something black. Vintage. Cool.
Top five favorite places to shop:
Thrift stores, flea markets, Etsy, estate sales and hat shops.
Fashion rules you always follow:
I dress to feel like myself at all times. I never dress for other people. I never want to feel like an imposter.
Fashion rules you like to break:
All of them.
What’s the best style advice you’ve ever been given?
A actually really love the quote by Alber Elbaz of Lanvin: “Fashion now isn’t about the size of your diamond or the logo on your bag. It’s about having the freedom to work without a formula.” I read that in Vogue in my early 20’s and it resonated with me.
Three favorite things in your closet:
My red bandana, my fringe suede boots and my vintage hats.
Most you’ve ever spent on a piece?
I splurge on shoes and good denim. Perhaps around $300 on a really crazy pair of black Jeffrey Campbell platforms.
I dream of owning:
More and more pairs of vintage Levi’s 501s.
Favorite current trend?
I’m gonna plead the fifth on that one.
Biggest fashion mistake you’ve made:
Khaki pedal pushers in high school paired with an aqua turtleneck and bad hair.
Favorite fashion designer/s or brand/s:
I actually geek out so much about this kind of stuff so I will try to be calm and only list one or two. I always love Giambattista Valli, J. Mendel, Rodarte, Tom Ford, Balmain, and Balenciaga. Oh and Jil Sander.
