Q&A with Manready Mercantile’s Travis Weaver

We are so excited for our Houston show May 7th. The talent we have lined up is an incredibly inspiring and talented group that we are simply giddy to meet, support and SHOP!

Local brick and mortar Manready Mercantile is no exception. Owner Travis Weaver has cultivated a lifestyle brand and store in the heart of Houston all about beautiful products with a rich Americana vibe. We’re smitten with his goods and vision for the grassroots biz.

“Manready Mercantile stands behind well-made goods that carry stories deep as the maker’s roots themselves and invites customers to add their own story through their use and interaction with these products,” says Travis, who hails from Zephyr, Texas. “From hustling candles door to door in 2012, to opening a flagship store in 2014, to sights unseen in years to come, Manready Mercantile exists to serve hardworking folks with quality goods and attention to detail.”

Manready Mercantile stocks over 130 brands including pantry items (hello, whiskey soaked beef jerky), unisex leather bags and boots, silver jewelry, vintage menswear and small batch denim.

You’re from a small town. What brought you to Houston? After college, I moved here from Austin to do the normal hustle and grind. I was never my own boss and honestly had little if no creative freedom. I hate to feel held back and wanted to control my own destiny, which is why I started my own business.

Have you always known you’d own your own business? I tried a lot of different things over the years, but there was never that big moment where I knew I’d created greatness. The moment I took my goods to a flea market and began selling Manready Mercantile goods, I knew the sky was the limit.

What do you think is the key to creating a successful business? Don’t listen to everybody, but know who to listen to. You can’t do it on your own. Utilize social media, think wildly and creatively, be unique, tell a story and be honest. Don’t trash others along the way, but make sure that folks know what you’re all about and why.

What inspires you to get out of bed in the morning? I do a backflip out of bed in the mornings! I play with my two Weimaraner dogs and tackle my list of design projects and goals. Every day something new comes up and it’s my goal to shake things up. I get bored easily, so this is my way of always staying alert and ambitious.

Describe your brick and mortar: I have a 3,500 square foot space with retail, production, shipping, a leather workshop, and a lounge/event area inside. It was built in 1920 and is a true brick and mortar. When you walk through the doors, you can’t help but to be inspired to create something impressive!

Manready Mercantile carries clothes, accessories, apothecary and even home/pantry goods. Anything else you dream of selling or creating? We’re basically a general goods store packed with the best of what’s around! We’re always on the hunt for unique products. If we can’t find them, we make them. I’m focusing on leather goods, holiday gift bundles, facial products, and travel related goods for the time being. Who knows what tomorrow will bring.
