Over the past six years, I’ve slowly-but-steadily (translation: carefully plugged away at the biz while getting engaged, buying a house, remodeling said house, getting married, birthing two babies, blah blah…) grown Flea Style from an intimate holiday market into a thriving biannual shopping bonanza all about awesome vintage, handmade and one-of-a-kind wares.
After my youngest baby turned one, I made a decision this year to go big. I’ve known for a while that the business had major legs but was torn which way to run with it. I seriously considered a full-time ginormous store for a couple years. I’ve contemplated a smaller but more regular show. In the end, I decided it didn’t need to be so black and white and opted to keep the seasonal shows but take over bigger venues, more venues and possibly add a smaller retail concept (brick and mortar and/or online) into the mix if my husband doesn’t leave me.
I finally found a Dallas home to accommodate our square footage and parking needs in Fair Park’s automobile building (so freaking excited!!!). From there I set my eyes on our next city and Houston was honestly my first choice. Period.
I knew many of our Dallas vendors wanted to enter the market there and I loved the idea of introducing Houston to some new makers and collectors. But I’ve also admired Houston’s thriving creative scene for years and was itching to bring them into the Flea Style family.
So I called up a few pals that live there, set up some meetings, jumped on Southwest Airlines and instantly inked a deal with Silver Street Studios, the only venue I was interested in. The 20,000 square foot warehouse is designed for our event and in the thick of Houston’s bustling art scene.
So here we are, with a May 7th show date and applications live. I’m. So. Excited!!!
We’ve already received applications from tons of talented cats from several devoted Dallas vendors to H Town’s finest including Lynn Goode Vintage (killer mid-century modern furniture) and Sunchild, a curator of unique well-made goods.
Circle back over the next several months for more details and fun tidbits on what we have in store.
See you soon, Houston!
