Shop Talk: New Hires + Grand Opening Prep
We’re currently in the eye of the retail opening storm! On Wednesday we officially moved out of our office and into the new space! Enter all of the emotion emojis… We’re a little sad, a little tired and totally excited about the whole situation!!!
Last week we invited our new hires to the new space for a little team meet and greet and champagne toast! It was so much fun and it already felt so natural as a team of eight! Yes, eight! We hired our final part-time sales associate this week and are officially a team of nine and ready to rock!
Now we’re all in the thick of settling into our new space. We’ve hired some major muscles to help us install hundreds of fixtures and furnishings we’ve collected over the past year. Most of the items have inches of dust on them and so we’re hosing down piece by piece, hand drying them and then painstakingly selecting their perfect home in the retail, event or office space inside.
While I’m working out those details, the team is starting to transform our vintage and antique items from adding a fresh coat of paint to installing legs or wheels to things so they easily stand or move inside the retail floor. They’re entering items in our POS system, printing labels, pinning on tags, placing barcodes on tags, etc. It’s a lot of work and takes a ton of time!
Last week I was so stressed and overwhelmed by construction hiccups I decided to hit the road and shop First Monday Trade Days to clear my mind and enjoy a little retail therapy. I scored so many cool pieces for the store from vintage turkey feeders for our entry hanging baskets to a huge antique iron rolling cart that will be used to dish wine to florals. Right after lunch the skies opened up and it started to pour down rain so I packed up soaking wet and went back Saturday to finish up my haul. So glad I did as I scored a pair of rattan chairs, the prettiest pink door and some vintage odds and ends that will make fun decorative fixtures.
My dad flew in town Thursday night after my big trip out East and together we tackled a ton of little projects on my plate. From filling in holes in the concrete to figuring out some pipe insulation problems, he was my superman that day! It was so fun to show him the space in person after telling him about it for months and months. On Friday wallpaper was also installed and looks so festive and fun! I love how the fluttering butterfly design turned out and can’t wait to layer these pretty areas with old paintings and art to add a dose of funk.
In addition to figuring out store decor and product details, we’re also in the midst of ironing out our grand opening party for friends and family as well as the public. Before we officially open our doors, we are inviting our nearest and dearest to see the space first (think immediate family, best pals, our construction crew, architect, the former owners, etc.). Then, the next day, we’re open for our first day of business and hammering out some fun elements from a class in the studio to free sips.
Installing interiors has always been my favorite part of the design process. However, this one has me feeling extremely overwhelmed. There is so much to do before June 1st! We’re just taking task by task and day by day and know that it will all come together if we stay focused. Wish us luck! We can’t wait to show you the final result. I can promise you that buckets full of blood, sweat, tears and love was poured into every inch of this space.
