I first met SiO Beauty founder Gigi Howard in my early 20s while living in Dallas. I was in a Barney’s dressing room when I literally bumped into the Georgia native and she struck up a conversation in her deep Southern drawl.
I soon moved to New York, but when I returned to Dallas about a year later, we were re-united by friends and have been thick as thieves since. We’ve had countless slumber and dance parties. She spoke at my wedding ceremony. And I recently spent my 36th birthday with her in New York where she now lives and had one of the most memorable nights of my life landing in Halston’s old Madison Avenue apartment at 2 a.m. (but that’s another story for another time).
Gigi is a giver and one of the most generous people I know. That’s why she worked in public relations for two decades; she loves to help and promote others. Because of that role she had for so long (and a serious dose of fear she’ll tell you), she didn’t pursue her own dreams of starting a business until her early 40s after connecting with the right motivating factors including a new baby, mentor and investor.
I’m so honored to tell her story on our podcast today. For one, because I’m so proud of my dear friend and her accomplishments after hearing about her dreams over so many martinis a decade ago. But also because it’s such a testament to the fact that it’s never too late to start. You just have to start.
Tune into our latest Fridays with Flea Style podcast episode to learn how Gigi (who has no professional business background, by the way!) is building a giant beauty brand while staying true to her roots. Pssst… Gigi is offering 25% off all SiO Beauty products through April 15th with code FLEASTYLE25. Told you she’s generous!
Favorite quote? “Do something you love and you will never work a day in your life.”
Do you have a motto you live by? “We have nothing to fear, but fear itself.”
Any business advice for entrepreneurs or people considering starting a business? Never fear failing. It’s ok to fail, it makes you stronger. Be kind to people, even if they are not kind to you. You never know, maybe they are having difficulties in their life and are very unhappy.
What would you be doing if you weren’t in your current job role? I would most likely still be in public relations.
Describe your picture perfect day off: I would be hanging with my son at the beach eating fried chicken.
If money was no object, what would you splurge on for yourself? I would feed millions of hungry people. Materialistic splurge? A private plane because I get super anxious in airports.
Book currently on your nightstand? Becoming by Michelle Obama. She is a powerful advocate for women and children all over the world. And, she is so down to earth.
Current music crush? I love Luke Bryan. He’s a Georgia boy!
If you could score a mentor session with anybody for an hour, who would you want to sit down with and why? Oprah. I would talk the whole time about how amazing she is in that she has given so much to this world with her kindness. She has changed thousands of lives emotionally and financially. Not many people in this world have done what she has and accomplished what she has accomplished.
Best beauty advice? Stay out of the sun! Wear SPF 30 at all times, even if it’s snowing out!
Favorite beauty products besides your own brand? I talk all about this in the podcast — so go listen. But teaser: They’re all available at the drug store, except one!
