Over the past two decades, Jenny Grumbles has owned a retail store, painted furniture business and custom art company. During that time, she even squeezed in a buyer gig on A&E’s hit series Storage Wars Texas for 36 episodes.
After giving birth in 2014, she slowly closed her brick-and-mortar to focus primarily on her painting business, J.Grumbles Studio. We sit down with the working mom to learn about shifting with the seasons of life while staying fulfilled creatively and professionally.
Listen to Jenny’s wildly honest and inspiring story — and learn a little more about her — below!
Favorite quote? If you always do what you have always done, then you will always get what you have always gotten.
What inspires you and your art? I’m inspired by people who are intentional about being themselves. In art, I’m inspired by light. I have an obsession with where the light is hitting the scene and/or subject. There are two super-inspiring people in my life right now that Dallas is lucky to have: Paul Rasmussen at Highland Park United Methodist Church and Kevin Cummings at SoulCycle. Listen to either of them for a minute, and I swear it will change your life!
What made you decide to go on Storage Wars? I wanted nothing more than for my business to grow. I thought the exposure could potentially be a game changer (hear what really happened in my podcast with Brittany)!
If you weren’t a full-time artist today, what would you be doing and why? I would move to DC and work in politics.
What’s your favorite picked piece that you’ve ever found? I have the world’s coolest (in my opinion) lamps from the Salvation Army.
Describe your picture-perfect day off: Coffee, SoulCycle, beach (so I guess an airplane is involved), treasure-hunting in some capacity, molten chocolate lava cake for dinner, concert or movie date with husband and no phone all day.
Current playlist or radio station on repeat? I’ve got a playlist I made right now called Jenny Jams that I blast while I paint. It’s a super duper random mix of Lumineers, Jay Z, Switchfoot, The Record Company, Nicki Bluhm, 2Pac and Audioslave.
If money was no object, what would you splurge on for yourself? A beach house and a personal chef. I’m the worst cook ever.
What’s something interesting the readers would love to know about being on Storage Wars? When you win a storage unit at auction, you are responsible for either taking over the rent of the unit or immediately unloading the entire contents of the unit and dealing with it. Not a simple task by any means, especially in Texas — in the summer.
If you could score a mentor session with anybody for an hour, who would you want to sit down with and why? Michelle Obama. I’m working on tapping into my soul and being myself, and then using that for the greater good. She 100-percent does that.
