Fridays with Flea Style: Sarah Briggs Founder Sarah Wilson

We’ve watched Sarah Wilson’s small business journey from the beginning when she was a budding jewelry vendor at our very first show. Her growth over the past decade is inspiring and downright remarkable.

On our most recent episode of Fridays with Flea Style, we sit down with Wilson to chat about her formative Mormon childhood (she’s one of 13 siblings!) and impulsive move to New York City with $40 to her name post college to her difficult divorce, ditching Dallas for small town Texas and road to happiness and fortune.

Don’t miss this amazing hour with the married mother-of-two who tells it all while offering tons of inspiring advice in this episode.

Favorite motto/quote/life advice: When life gives you lemons, eat it whole — rind, seeds and all. And stare at it in the eyes while you do it. Show it you’re not messing around! Basically, do the hard things. Expect them, be ready for them and conquer them!

What inspires you when you sit down to design a new collection? I have to get in my dark and twisty place, and I have to be alone. I spray my manly scented essential oil room sprays, flip the moody music on (or rap!) and shut the world out. Then it flows like a rapid!

What led you to create a jewelry line? Was this something you always pictured yourself doing? Not at all! When people asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always said ‘something I’ve never heard of.’ I knew I wanted to be in fashion and thought it would be designing apparel. I always engineered whatever it was I wanted from early on (dollhouses with working ceiling fans and elevators out of cardboard come to mind), so I started playing with jewelry while I was a nanny. I thought once the jewelry took off, I’d expand into art, clothing, home décor, etc. But the universe has chosen jewelry for me. And I love it! I think it’s good that I wasn’t really a ‘jewelry’ girl. It means I come from a completely different perspective and can bring something new to the table.

If you didn’t do your current job, what would you be doing and why? I’d be in culinary school. I love food. I am a math and science artist. With jewelry, there is so much math and science to the architecture of a piece. With food, there is also a math and science. Also, they both bring insane amounts of joy to those who indulge. That’s what I’m all about!

Favorite piece you’ve ever designed and why? Hoops! I was born to hoop the world. I don’t know what I look like without them. Big hoops! Bigger the better. Every season I task myself to reinvent the hoop without overdesigning it. It is my favorite challenge. And always my favorite earring!

Describe your picture-perfect day off: Who needs a day off when work is your dream?! Seriously, I don’t like time off. Or vacations. Or not being productive. I have retired. This is what I’ve chosen to enjoy my days! But after a good productive work day, I do love my country porch swing with my family and my dog. And the wind blowing in the trees and the Texas sunsets. That is the perfect day on (ok and with a killer cheese and charcuterie board)!

Current playlist or radio station on repeat? Everyone thinks I’m so weird, but I’m so hyper that I listen to spa relaxation stations on Pandora on my headphones. I need things that calm me down and center me. It puts other people to sleep, but it truly helps me!

If money was no object, what would you splurge on for yourself? An Annie Bing wardrobe. All of it.

What’s something interesting the readers would love to know about running a flourishing jewelry company? Growing is so fun! It’s also not without speed bumps. I have failed a ton to get here and still do — daily. The most important thing you can have is a tribe.

If you could score a mentor session with anybody for an hour, who would you want to sit down with and why? Dave Ramsey. His podcast is the reason for so much of this — my company — happening. What he teaches makes you take responsibility, which leads to power, immense power. And really good sleep at night.
