Last week while most people we’re cutting loose to enjoy July 4th, we rolled up our sleeves, put on our sneakers and got to work on a major two-day floor move. Twice a year, we like to entirely shake up our 3,000 square foot retail store.
The major shakeup always lets us do a deep clean, solid inventory check-in and bond big time as a team.
Unlike most retail concepts, we can’t precisely plan out an installation because we never quite know our product mix due to daily vendor drop offs (but that’s part of the magic!). And, with Brittany shopping flea markets monthly, we also never quite know what sort of fixtures and random finds we can expect to play with from her, too.
Here’s a look at our fresh summer floors and a bit more about our process pulling the big makeover together!
We’re loving our new jewelry area right up front! The natural light — and this vintage painted case Brittany found in Canton last year — created the perfect combo to display our dainty bling from 20-plus vendors.
We’re always trying to think of fun new ways to tell stories about our merchandise. Up front we created a $25 and under product table (that’s it in the corner) to give people on-the-go a quick place to grab a gift from colorful sunglasses to new self care essentials.
From the signage (“Say Yes to Sequins”) on an old thread spool to special sparkly outfits encased in a vintage armoire, this little moment is a fun shopping spot for gals that love to add shimmer and shine to their closets.
Our new entry is a blush, beachy boho theme. The layered look offers everything from sage bundles and palo santo sticks to SoCal inspired artwork and Moroccan pillows. It’s a solid representation of all the categories you’ll find in the store while telling a story that’s seasonal and so Flea Style!
Our team worked so hard to pull this move off! Printing tags, pulling out-of-season product, physically moving everything (with no professional muscles to help!), merchandising thousands of items including our cute paper goods… we did it all together in just two days.
We have a few real challenges merchandising our product mix: Our vendors create and collect about 90-percent of our skus so we don’t have a real finger on the theme, colors, sizes and fixture needs of things until they arrive. This unique situation also makes it hard to tell cohesive stories or make items gel so customers can understand how to fold the finds into their lives.
So we put a ton of thought into ways to position product to steal shoppers’ hearts and find a way into their closets and homes through intentional placement, merchandising and story telling.
With this move falling smack into summer, we had to have a vibrant wanderlust section! We love how this colorful, eclectic lifestyle moment turned out! It screams “I’m packing up for Palm Springs with a quick pit stop in Joshua Tree!” #goals
With the recent addition of some custom hats and more men’s gear, we beefed up this rustic-meets-retro section for guys.
Glassware is a top seller for us, so we dedicated a vertical space to the category to really spell out what we have on hand for the shopper targeting us for cool entertaining pieces. We used an old paint can storage rack from our building’s former owners to display our current stash of goblets, tumblers and wine glasses.
Art is our most difficult item to display. With solid brick walls, it’s a nightmare to drill holes to hang items. So we pulled clothing racks, dressers, old ladders and other items to hang, drip and prop a sliver of our current assortment. As pieces sell, we replace with another vintage oil painting or print so this moment evolves daily!
Shop our store for unique handmade and vintage finds daily! We’re located at 3009 Commerce Street in Deep Ellum and open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
