Bungalow Lowdown: Demo Day & All The Dust

The bungalow is officially covered in a few inches of dust, and we’re not mad about it! Last week, our four-week remodel officially kicked off and our amazing crew has been working around the clock to meet my tight deadline.

Our team started with demolition of the kitchen floors, sunroom floors and some built-in cabinets. The main living area had several floor elevations and it was funky and also a little dangerous. So I decided to even them out which meant removing lots of tile.

Of course, demo never goes as planned and sadly the original wood floors under the kitchen tile were not salvageable so the team had to lace in new oak panels. To do so, the bar cabinet had to be removed, but will be put back after the floors are stained and sealed.

     

With everything happening at Flea Style, Heirloom Haul, Wide Brim and our Fort Worth expansion, I’ve had little time to shop for the bungalow. So, late at night, I’ve been trolling websites for pretty, affordable and durable materials.

I found a cool aged oversized hexagon tile for the kitchen nook (formerly the sunroom) that has a groovy faux wood finish. I loved the shape but aged wood patina, too. For the kitchen backsplash, I opted for this gorg glazed blush 4×12 inch subway tile. Both selections hail from Home Depot and were really reasonable.

Although the original hardwood floors were beautiful, they were too dark for my taste. I’m also not a fan of a shiny sheen. So this weekend the crew started sanding them down to reveal their original light oak beauty. I’m going with the same stain as my personal home, which has a whitewash mixture. We’ll seal them with a matte finish and they will be stunning once complete.

The light and airy hue will really open up the cozy quarters and also allow my feminine design mix to shine. (They’ll also hide more dust than the current dark color.) The guys are still sanding the floors today but should be done by tomorrow in time to seal them and allow them to dry over the weekend.

   

Last week some fixtures and appliances started rolling in from our new kitchen fridge to bathroom sconces and exterior cafe lights. Yesterday our new creamy white quartz kitchen countertops were installed as well as a sleek single bowl sink.

Wallpaper for a couple rooms is officially here and ready to be hung. My electrician and painters start their magic next week. I’m giddy to see the transformation some gorgeous chandeliers and pretty paint will create.

 

So far, everything has gone pretty smoothly and our open date still looks good for the first or second week of fall.  We’re so excited to swing open our doors and have this charming, cool space.
