I can't believe we air our final 2018 Fridays with Flea Style podcast episode today. I'm honored to end the year with my dear friend, Texas native Lauren Essl. Lauren has had an incredible calligraphy and custom wedding invitation design career; she even calls several lettering phenoms/artists (hello, Alli Koch!) former students.
Last year, she picked up her life and moved to Seattle with her husband and dogs to follow their dreams of exploring a new city. Since then, she’s experienced some life highs and lows and is currently pondering a pivot from entrepreneur to employee as her business has hit some bumps in the road while away from her client base and comforts of home.
I've wanted to catch up with her for a while to learn all about her big life change and where things stand with her biz Blue Eye Brown Eye. I was so pumped she was coming home for the holidays and that we could connect over champagne to tell all.
This is our most candid podcast ever. It's a raw tale of success, perseverance, reflection and rebirth. Don’t miss Lauren’s inspiring story that reveals the real side of a self-employed creative person looking for what’s next. Listen to the full episode below and learn a little bit more about my cool pal below.
Happy Friday, y'all!
Favorite motto/quote/life advice: Just start!
Book currently on your nightstand (or that you want to buy for it): My reading habits have become so poor in the last year. It’s mostly full of magazines. But I definitely want to read Michelle Obama’s new book “Becoming.”
Fun fact about ya? I have the same birthday (October 21st) as Kim Kardashian, baby!
If you didn’t have your current job, what would you be doing and why? I’d love to work at an animal shelter or with dogs in some capacity. I have a huge heart for rescue and have always dreamed of a life where I get to help doggies all day.
Describe your picture perfect day off: This would likely revolve around food and/or wine. So I’m thinking a day in Napa, wine tasting, stopping at cute gourmet markets for snacks and then ending up by a fire drinking wine with my husband Travis and our dogs.
Current playlist or radio station on repeat? Since we’re in the middle of the holidays, it’s all Christmas all the time. But on a typical day, it’s usually some Drake and Beyonce.
If money was no object, what would you splurge on for yourself? Superficial answer: I’ve got my eye on some Gucci.
If you could score a mentor session with anybody for an hour, who would you want to sit down with and why?Artist Ashley Longshore. Travis and I are such fans of her work and I admire her story and hustle so much. If I could pick her brain and just hang with her for an hour, that would be a blast. Champagne would undoubtedly be involved.
Don’t miss Lauren’s podcast. It’s so good! Check it out along with other Fridays with Flea Style episodes on iTunes here. Pictures provided by @Micheleequitz.
