How To Find Your Hat Size
No two heads are alike — and that’s a beautiful thing! But most hats do come in standard sizes, which is where a trusty hat size chart comes in. Whether you’re eyeing a cowboy hat, a fedora, or a beachy boater, knowing your hat size makes all the difference. Wondering how to measure your head for a hat and make sense of those numbers? We’ve got you covered (literally).
Most hats are sized in centimeters, based on the inside circumference of the crown. Sometimes those numbers are converted into inches (the metric system tends to make us Americans break into a sweat). Vegan hats and less-expensive toppers may be one size fits most, with adjustable ribbon ties inside the crown to size down (sorry, larger noggins, no going up). Serious hat folk may want a near-custom fit, and some companies sell a huge range of sizes with only a tiny fraction difference (literally) from one to the next.
Measure your head for a hat
When measuring your head for a hat, you’re looking for the circumference just above your ears, eyebrows, and the center of the back of your head.
Finding your hat size is as easy as 1-2-3:
-
Wrap a soft measuring tape around your head. Measure where you would want the hat’s sweatband to sit if you were to wear it flat (or Texas style, y’all). That’s usually about an inch or two above your ears and eyebrows.
-
Check the fit. The tape should be snug but not tight. You want to be able to wiggle your hat around a bit, but you don’t want it to be so loose that it falls over your eyes or flies off your head.
-
Note the measurement to the nearest centimeter or 1/8th inch, and compare it to our hat size chart below.
Pro tip: No measuring tape? Use ribbon, string or even a strip of paper, then measure it flat with a ruler or stainless steel measuring tape. Voilà! There’s your hat size.

California style vs. Texas style
If you plan always to wear your hat halo style (what we call California style: tilted back, a little dreamy), you might want to size down. If you’re going to wear your hat flat (Texas style, y’all), stick with your true measurement. When in doubt or between sizes, size up. You can always adjust down, but you can’t fix a too-tight crown — and a hat-induced headache can ruin your fun fast.
Trucker hats and baseball caps
Some trucker hats and baseball caps are made for an exact head circumference. For those, you’ll need to know your size or risk a forehead crease or gust of wind. We list those sizes on our size chart as “fitted.” But many truckers and baseball caps are one-size-fits-most and have adjustable snap backs or Velcro tabs.

The Flea Style hat size chart
Our cowboy hats and fedoras come in six sizes. We find that fits just about everyone, from petite crowns to larger domes.
The average hat size for women is 57cm. The average hat size for men, is 59cm.
Why hat size matters
The right hat size isn’t just about comfort — it’s about confidence. A hat that fits well stays put on breezy days, doesn’t pinch during long wear, and looks effortlessly chic. Once you know your size, you’ll never have to second-guess in-store or online.
