Round Top, My Happy Place: What I’m Packing for the Hunt

There are places you visit, and then there are places that feel like a little piece of your soul. For me, Round Top, Texas, is most definitely the latter.

Twice a year, I make my pilgrimage to this magical stretch of Texas countryside for one of my favorite traditions: days spent wandering dusty fields, digging through barns, discovering treasures and inevitably bringing home far more than I planned. My wagon is never big enough, my list is never short enough, and somehow, there’s always one more thing I simply can’t live without.

Round Top is woven into the story of Flea Style. So many of our store fixtures have been discovered here, from the perfectly weathered pieces that give our shops their one-of-a-kind spirit to the wonderfully unexpected finds that make every space feel collected rather than decorated. It’s also where I kicked off my How to Style a Hat book tour last spring, making an already special place even more meaningful. And if you walked through my home or peeked inside my closet, you’d find treasures from Round Top tucked into nearly every corner.

This week, I’m heading back into the fields with my trusty wagon in tow and a very long list of things to hunt down. Think vintage treasures for our hat bars, unique pieces for our stores and a few special finds for an upcoming new store. More on that soon!

But first, let’s talk about packing.

Round Top is one of the few places where you can dress like you're headed to prom, the rodeo and a dusty flea market all in the same outfit — and somehow, it just works.

This is the place for ball skirts paired with denim blouses, patchwork coats worn with cutoffs, perfectly broken-in boots with piles of eclectic accessories. The more personal, the better. The goal isn't to look perfectly put together. It's to look like yourself – with a little extra personality.

And, of course, there are hats. Band hats, trucker hats, curled brims and wild feather parties. Round Top is practically a playground for hat lovers, and you know I never pass up an opportunity to try a new look.

I always shop my own Flea Style stores before packing for the trip because the best outfits are the ones that mix and match, layer easily and feel just as good after eight hours in the fields as they did over my morning latte.

Here's what I'm packing for this trip.

Day 1: Western with a touch of lace

I will hit the fields running with a lace-trim maxi dress, pink cowboy boots and our brown Rider straw hat. This dress is easy-breezy and comfy for the four-hour drive to Warrenton. For evening, I'll throw on a denim jacket, pile on the jewelry and add my horseshoe necklace. Round Top days have a way of turning into long, lovely nights.

Day 2: Bohemian to the bone

This is my only full day, so I need to dress for day to night. A crochet duster, denim pants, a graphic tee and our Texas canvas trucker hat are the plan. This mix is comfortable enough for hours of treasure hunting, with just enough flair for tacos and line dancing under the stars at night.

Day 3: A little rock 'n' roll

For my final day, comfort is crucial. Our bestselling star pants, a simple tank top, bandana and a trucker hat will do the trick. Easy, a little unexpected and ready for whatever the day brings.

I can’t wait to hit the fields, see what treasures find their way into my wagon and soak up these special few days in my happy place.
